At 16, I found myself an extra in Welles’ last film, Tye Other aside of the Wind. We were press people covering a gala for a director’s last movie(John Huston) and I got called off set due to a white shirt that was too bright. A voice said to me,”come over here- sit!” It was John Huston and on my right was Orson in an overstuffed chair directing. The enormous man, dressed in black silk pajamas gnawing on an enormous cigar, was the most charismatic human I’ve ever been near. He had cherry fires in his eyes and when he spoke, the room hushed. The gonzo production on a shoestring, part mockumentary, part autobiography, was difficult to fathom at the time. 40 years later, completed via Netflix, allowed a frame by frame search and sure enough, I made the cut, a whole 5 frames! Incredible experience.
Whoever runs this world does not like upstart geniuses, especially in Hollywood, & we know who has been in charge out there since the beginning. It was like the first round of Epsteln. I doubt he was too upset to leave there. Such a talented interesting man.
