I wrote a “practice” essay about Newton when I was doing a foundation year at the University of Liverpool. The question was, “Should Newton be Considered a Scientist or Magician?”. The work he did concerning alchemy and the occult was so thorough and it’s fascinating how it informed his research. Yet his alchemical work is not really talked about compared to his theory of gravity, maths, astronomy, etc.

The Romans did a similar thing in that they wrote messages on clay tablets. Messages of harm usually.
