Last Friday I had my first gig
(If you want to call DJing at a local dive bar, a gig). I’m 47 and just started DJing a few months ago. I got the gig by sheer luck. This bar is where the local boys hang out, and I was told by the guy who usually DJs there, that I should alternate mainstream rock, classic rock, a few upbeat pop songs and that after midnight, I can spin whatever I want. For me that usually means drum n Bass or techno. I figured 3 hours from 9-12 of playing mostly mainstream rock hits with a few house or EDM tracks, then just play my stuff from 12-2. I only had 2 days to prepare so I threw together a folder of that sort of music which had about 80-100 tracks on it. I figured I’d wing it, but how hard can it be? After the first half hour I was told by management that I need to stick to rock and mainstream, and customers kept walking up and asking me to play metal. And I don’t mean like metallica, I mean like death metal (which I didn’t have on my thumb drive and had to DL on the spot, while still keeping everything playing. Switching from genre to genre, key to key and bpm to bpm is not easy. Picking the next song to play while considering the genre and BPMs was NOT easy! I realized quickly that I did not have nearly enough variety of music and that I was terribly unprepared. Thankfully, the bar had wifi and I was able to use my streaming service to add variety. It’s crazy to say this, but I think being a bar/party DJ is harder than being a club DJ who actually gets to spin in their own style and music that is mostly the same genre.
I know it aint the best way to dj if djing live at a gig but I always love randomly picking tracks to mix together i know it can clash at times but its a good way to find new mixes ❤
Ever play the wrong track? OMG why do they put live in concert versions on albums? I didn’t know when I pressed play… an no… I was queued up good to go so didn’t have time to find an alternative… might of just mixed it out after 20 seconds.
Most of the time they’re playing pre-mixed music. Thats why i only respect vinyl djs, not digital dj’s
